After Your Surgery with Dr. Yan

If you recently had surgery with Dr. Yan, this page will help answer common questions and guide you on what to expect during recovery.

🔹 Ureteric Stents

If you have a ureteric stent (a thin tube between the kidney and bladder), it’s normal to experience:

  • Mild to severe discomfort in your side or bladder

  • Blood in the urine that may fluctuate from day to day

  • An increased urge to urinate or a burning sensation

These symptoms are usually temporary and improve after the stent is removed.

You can learn more on the Ureteric Stents page under Patient Topics.

Call your doctor or go to the emergency department if you experience:

  • Fever or chills

  • Severe pain not relieved by medication

  • Inability to urinate

🔹 Catheters (Foley)

If you were discharged with a Foley catheter, please review the instructional video on catheter care under the Videos section of this website.

This video explains:

  • How to keep your catheter clean

  • How to prevent tugging or blockage

  • When to contact the office or go to the emergency department

🔹 When to Seek Urgent Care

Go to the nearest emergency department if you have:

  • Fever above 38°C

  • Severe pain that you cannot manage at home

  • Heavy bleeding or inability to urinate

🔹 Follow-Up

You will receive instructions about stent removal or follow-up appointments at the time of discharge.
